In 1917 Sassoon tried to rebel against the war by making a public anti-war statement. One of Graves's closest friends at this time was the poet Siegfried Sassoon, who was also an officer in the RWF. Apart from a brief spell back in France, he spent the rest of the war in England. At the Battle of the Somme he was so badly wounded by a shell-fragment through the lung that he was expected to die, and indeed was officially reported as 'died of wounds'. In later years he omitted war poems from his collections, on the grounds that they were too obviously "part of the war poetry boom". He developed an early reputation as a war poet and was one of the first to write realistic poems about his experience of front line conflict. He published his first volume of poems, Over the Brazier, in 1916. It was too weird and a little distasteful, and I think unnecessary. But otherwise, I did not like being in Opal’s head at all. Ronan and Adam has some good character moments I just like when they’re existing together. And there was a really intriguing part in the middle that I think will have big consequences for the Ronan trilogy. The last 10 or so pages were very good, very interesting, very Raven Boys-y. *Spoilers if you haven’t finished The Raven Cycle* An enchanting story from Maggie Stiefvater featuring Opal, Ronan, and Adam from her bestselling Raven Cycle, taking place after the events of The Raven King. Benner relates how Machiavelli rose as an advisor in the Florentine Republic, advancing the city's interests as a diplomat and military strategist, only to become a political pariah when the Republic was defeated. Through dialogues and diaries, we witness dramatic episodes, including Savonarola's fiery sermons against the elite in Florence's piazza, Machiavelli's secret negotiations with Caterina Sforza at the court of Forl, and the Florentines' frantic preparations to resist Pope Julius's plan to over-throw their Republic. Shaking the dust from history, Benner masterfully interweaves Machiavelli's words with those of his friends and enemies, giving us a biography with all the energy of fiction. In Be Like the Fox, Erica Benner sets the record straight: far from the ruthless "Machiavellian" henchman that people think he was, Machiavelli emerges here as a profound ethical thinker who fought to uphold high moral standards and restore the democratic freedoms of his beloved Florence. Since the publication of The Prince five centuries ago, Machiavelli has been associated with political amorality. Amis's use of these techniques is aimed to create an unsettling and irrational aura for the reader indeed, one of the recurrent themes in the novel is the narrator's persistent misinterpretation of events. Īmis engages in several forms of reverse discourse including reverse dialogue, reverse narrative, and reverse explanation. The narrator may alternatively be considered merely a necessary device to narrate a reverse chronology. Some passages may be interpreted as hinting that this narrator may in some way be the conscience, but this is not clear. The narrator is not exactly the protagonist himself but a secondary consciousness apparently living within him, feeling his feelings but with no access to his thoughts and no control over events. The narrator, together with the reader, experiences time passing in reverse. The novel recounts the life of a German Holocaust doctor in reverse chronology. It is notable partly because the events occur in a reverse chronology, with time passing in reverse and the main character becoming younger and younger during the novel. It was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1991. Time's Arrow: or The Nature of the Offence (1991) is a novel by Martin Amis.
